Perhaps most apparent when raising a glass at the bar – and admiring the timeless character between the pages of old books and photographs from the open-air library – it’s subtly yet endlessly apparent that this is a camp closely connected to its locale. Named after a species of tree growing nearby, the contemporary style designed by architects Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens carries the legacy of the classic safari adventure, using indigenous Zambian building methods to curate an elevated aesthetic. Retaining a sense of rustic minimalism in its accents, a canvas of natural linens, timber and copper paints a decidedly 21st-century image, culminating in light and airy suites where an in-room spa treatment wouldn’t at all be out of place.
Yet, emerging from the shade granted to each suite by ancient msikzi trees, thoughtful luxury here continues in the camp location. The home of the walking safari – Time + Tide predecessor Norman Carr is widely recognised as their pioneer on the African continent – it’s no coincidence that South Luangwa National Park is just a short river crossing away. Far from the main gate, game drives both day and night near guarantee a whole host of animal sightings, with many making an appearance much closer on the waterfront, for more casual game viewing as an intriguing addition to relaxation.
